Der Name des Albums leitet sich aus der Überlegung ab, dass die Verbindung der Aufgaben als Mutter und als Komponistin kaum erreichbar ist und es nur sehr wenig Musik von Frauen über kindliche Themen gibt. Das gleichnamige Auftragswerk von Liliya Ugay bietet in zwei Sätzen die Beschäftigung des Singens eines Schlafliedes und des Spielens mit dem Kind.
Auch die anderen Werke der Einspielung stammen von Frauen. Die Sonate von Amy Beach ist dabei das älteste Stück. Die Fantasie für Violine und Klavier von Florence Price bietet die Verbindung postromantischer Klassik mit Merkmalen des afroamerikanischen Volksliedes. Die Snapshots for an Andean Album setzen in kleinen Formaten die Fotos des indianischen Fotografen Martin Chambi von Szenen aus dem Leben des peruanischen Volkes in Musik.
Ob sich für Mütter und Interpretinnen die gleichen Probleme auftun, wie für Komponistinnen, darauf geht das Album nicht ein. Die Interpretinnen machen sich jedenfalls mit ihrem auf die jeweilige Komposition ausgerichteten Interpretationen um die hier vorgestellten Werke sehr verdient. Summy Chang spielt die verschiedenen Geigenpartien technisch mit allen Finessen. Und auch ihre Gestaltungen des musikalischen Ausdrucks verdeutlichen, dass sie die Werke auch interpretatorisch gestaltend sicher in ihren Händen hat und damit das Innenleben verständlich zum Klingen bringt. Pianistin Clara Yang bietet sich als ebenbürtige Partnerin in musikalischen Angelegenheiten an, zumal auch sie mit modernen Werken vertraut ist.
The name of the album is derived from the consideration that the combination of the tasks as a mother and as a composer is hardly achievable and that there is very little music by women on child-related themes. The commissioned work of the same name by Liliya Ugay offers two movements dealing with the singing of a lullaby and playing with a child.
The other works on the recording were also written by women. The sonata by Amy Beach is the oldest piece. The Fantasy for Violin and Piano by Florence Price combines post-Romantic classical music with features of African-American folk song. The Snapshots for an Andean Album use small formats to set the photos of scenes from the lives of the Peruvian people by the Indian photographer Martin Chambi to music.
The album does not go into whether the same problems arise for mothers and interpreters as for female composers. In any case, the interpreters do great justice to the works presented here with their interpretations of the respective compositions. Summy Chang plays the various violin parts with great technical finesse. And her interpretation of the musical expression also makes it clear that she has the works securely in her hands in terms of interpretation and thus makes the inner life sound comprehensible. Pianist Clara Yang offers herself as an equal partner in musical matters, especially as she is also familiar with modern works.
