Das Auffallendste an dieser Produktion mit Werken von George Gershwin (1898-1937) ist ihr Klang. Elite Recordings hat einen in diesen Werken wohl nie erreichten Grad an Durchhörbarkeit, Detailreichtum und Klangpräzision erreicht, die durch das Remastering noch prägnanter und brillanter wurden. Der Sound allein macht die CD zum absoluten Must für jeden, der Gershwins Musik mag.
Was die Interpretationen anbelangt, setzt Leonard Slatkin auf Spannung, Farben, klangliche Verspieltheit und moderate Rhythmik. Es geht ihm weniger um Jazzeinflüsse als um einen großen symphonischen Klang.
Es hat frechere Interpretationen gegeben, die Gershwins Wille Jazz und Klassik zu synthetisieren mit mehr Biss umsetzen, mit einem nervösen und wie improvisiert klingenden Spiel, aber diese hier wird in ihrer zurückgenommenen Art alle ‘Klassiker’ mehr als nur zufrieden stellen.
The most striking thing about this production of works by George Gershwin (1898-1937) is its sound. Elite Recordings has achieved a level of clarity, detail and sonic precision probably never achieved in these works, made even more incisive and brilliant by the remastering. The sound alone makes this CD an absolute must for anyone who likes Gershwin’s music.
As for the interpretations, Leonard Slatkin focuses on tension, color, tonal playfulness and moderate rhythm. He is less concerned with jazz influences than with a grand symphonic sound.
There have been bolder interpretations that realize Gershwin’s will to synthesize jazz and classical with more bite, with playing that is nervous and sounds as if improvised, but this one will more than satisfy all those preferring a more classical approach.
