The French lutenist and theorbist Pascal Monteilhet died on August 23 of a heart attack. Born in 1955, Pascal Monteilhet studied classical guitar from the age of nine and then perfected his lute playing at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, becoming in 1982 the first French lute player to graduate from this institution.

He played with the greatest baroque conductors, Fabio Biondi, Marc Minkowski, Philippe Pierlot and Christophe Rousset. He was also a permanent member of the ensemble Il Seminario Musicale since its creation in 1985 by countertenor Gérard Lesne.

In 1995 Monteilhet created his own ensemble Les Libertins and in 1996 he founded the ensemble Les Basses Réunies. He retired from musical life in 2005.
