French archeologists made a sensational discovery while working on the site of the roman forum in Bavay, near Maubeuge and close to the French-Belgian boarder. On their Facebook page Forum antique de Bavay, musée archéologique du Département du Nord they report about « small copper alloy tubes, an elaborate mouthpiece and fragments of a bell, » explains Patrice Herbin, head of the Department’s archaeology and heritage service. « Put end to end, they constitute a large Roman trumpet that could measure nearly 2.70m long. » Dismountable, the trumpet was probably used by the Roman army and during religious or official ceremonies.

Since, according to specialists, in France there is no trumpet from antiquity with all the parts, from the mouthpiece to the bell, this discovery is quite unique.
