For the seventh installment of his Chopin Project, Canadian pianist Louis Lortie has put together a program of Chopin’s Mazurkas, Polonaises and other dances. His interpretations are intelligently thought out, the rhythms are sophisticated and truly at their finest. He also plays the mazurkas with great internalization and feeling.

The Tarantelle op. 43 is highly virtuosic and played with windy lightness. Another highlight is the Rondo op. 16, which he differentiates very well in an interpretation that combines virtuosity, élan and rhetorical rubato, the whole with an astonishing palette of colors that makes the work very dramatic.

The rounded warmth of the sound of the Polonaise Héroïque, the intelligent heightening of the music and the good proportions of a very musically breathed rendition are another plus of this CD.
