This is a very noble and harmonically well-balanced interpretation of Bach’s 7 toccatas. French pianist Laurent Cabasso takes a very relaxed approach to Bach’s music. No historicism, no academic thinking, no structure-driven playing, Cabasso plays his Bach with great attention to detail, a natural breath and a very optimistic, even joyful touch.
Bach was not even 27 years old when he completed these toccatas, and that is exactly what one senses in Cabasso’s interpretation. This is the music of a young man, experimental, dynamic and sometimes very poetic. The musical and actually very unpretentious interpretation captivates with its lightness and unconventional attitude.
In addition, this Bach is extremely brilliantly played and leaves nothing to be desired in terms of sound, which also puts the quality of the instrument, the Opus 102 piano by Stephen Pauletto, in the best light. The full-bodied and rich sound of the instrument inspires just as much as its luminosity and transparency.
