The name of the composer Johanna Senfter is probably known to only a few people. She was born in 1879 and died in 1961. Her Opus 1 was a violin concerto, followed by works for orchestra, including 11 symphonies, as well as chamber music and songs. That Senfter has become little known is probably due to the fact that the composer limited her creative field to her birthplace of Oppenheim, near Mainz.

The double CD now released by Hänssler Classic presents her complete works for viola and piano, including the two sonatas op. 41 & op. 101, the duo op. 127, the changes op. 94 and the five pieces op. 76.

The interested listener is confronted with very well composed music that immediately captivates. Senfter has her own style, her compositions are not avant-garde, but are committed to the great tradition. Modern influences are audible, but Senfter manages to tie them into a tonal structure that is very varied, exciting and always rousing. Inventiveness and a tonal language that appeals in all respects make Senfter’s works for viola and piano attractive. It is music that deserves a place on concert stages. All the more credit to the two performers Roland Glassl, viola, and Oliver Triendl, piano, for taking on these wonderful pieces. And not only that. Both interpret the music with playfulness, a lot of commitment and an excellent sense for the essential. So this CD is absolutely worth hearing!
