Frank La Rocca: Mass of the Americas; Benedict XVI Choir, Benedict XVI Orchestra, Richard Sparks; 1 SACD Cappella Records CR425; Aufnahme 2021, Veröffentlichung 23.09.2022 (50'46) -Rezension von Norbert Tischer

Frank La Rocca (b. 1951) drew inspiration for his Mass of the Americas (Misa de las Américas), performed by the Choir and Orchestra of Benedict XVI under the direction of Richard Sparks, from folk melodies from the regions of 18th century Mexico. The work expands on the Mass (without Credo) in that it also includes praises, Ave Verum Corpus, Salve Regina, Alma Redemptoris Mater, Ave Regina Cælorum, Regina Cæli, and even an ‘Aue Maria’ in Nahuatl, the language Our Lady of Guadalupe is said to have spoken to San Juan Diego in 1531.

The music, in which the organ plays an important role, is quiet and contemplative throughout, and is atmospherically and reverently performed by the Ensemble Benedict XVI.
