Although Pier Giuseppe Sandoni was well established in his hometown of Bologna, he, like many other Italian artists, was drawn to England. There he was in the service of Handel. On Handel’s behalf, he brought the Italian prima donna Francesca Cuzzoni to London, with whom he lived a life of luxury, at first unattached, later married, thanks to her fees. In addition, Sandoni was a respected harpsichordist and composer.
From a collection of six cantatas published by a patroness, three are heard here. These are operas in miniature, not only in scope but also in the containment of the emotions portrayed and the stylistic challenges; hardly any coloratura is used. Formally, they follow Handel with two arias, one slow and one fast, each preceded by a recitative.
In addition, the CD offers a trio sonata, reminiscent of Corelli in form, as well as three different works for the harpsichord. Nicoleta Paraschivescu discovered during research that two movements from the Suite in G minor, a Prelude and an Allemande, correspond to the Allemandes BWV 836 and 837 in the Clavierbüchlein for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. The two movements were thus taken from Sandoni.
Francesca Aspromonte uses her soprano voice with great agility. She also has the technical skills to do so. Since the virtuosic demands are lacking here, she can first and foremost shape the flow of the music with ease. She also knows how to please with her legato, exemplary articulation and a balanced vocal line.
The interpretations of the La Floridiana ensemble are characterized by a lively and colorful performance. However, they give the singer the freedom she needs. The Sonata Settima a Trè for two violins and basso continuo is played by violinists Katharina Heutjer and Johannes Frisch with a fresh gesture in a very appealing way.
The leader of the ensemble La Floridiana, Nicoleta Paraschivescu, has taken over the harpsichord in addition to conducting. She shapes these compositions with sophisticated technique and inventiveness. The label’s usual high-quality release also has the cantata texts to offer in the informative booklet, making these premiere recordings a worthwhile catalog addition.
