Jahrhunderts.

Warner Classics releases a box set of all Warner recordings of Jacqueline Du Pré. Unlike a previously released collection, this one contains six more CDs than the old one and also grasps the very early recordings, some in mono, made by the BBC. Also new is a CD of Richard Strauss’s Don Quixote conducted by Adrian Boult and the Lalo concerto with the Cleveland Orchestra under Daniel Barenboim, who is also very present in the other recordings, whether as conductor or chamber musician. On the other hand, very good recordings are missing from this box, such as the Dvorak concerto from Stockholm with Celibidache as conductor and the Dvorak concerto with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Charles Groves, which came out on other labels.
In her short lifetime, Jaqueline Du Pré’s spontaneous and spirited playing has so influenced works such as the Elgar and Dvorak cello concertos that they are associated with her name.
Born in Oxford in 1945, the cellist made her debut at London’s Wigmore Hall at age 16. She was 22 when she married Daniel Barenboim in Jerusalem in 1967, three years before the first signs of multiple sclerosis appeared, because of which the cellist gave up her career at the age of 28. On October 19, 1987, she died at the age of 42 as a result of her illness.
What remained were her recordings: Testimonies to her enormous musicality, phenomenal virtuosity and irrepressible temperament. The Warner box is a monument in honor of one of the greatest musicians of the XX century.
