With their recording of the middle of the three sonatas op. 30 and the last, op. 96, James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong conclude their recording of Beethoven’s ten sonatas for violin and piano. With their richly detailed vision, they nevertheless manage to hold the thread and articulate the interpretations in an appealing and consistently shaped manner, so that one enjoys listening to their playing.
After the stony landscape with threatening clouds in the last recording (Pizzicato review), this CD now shows them in relaxed conversation while walking through a t forest. This is how you can imagine their interpretations, which have taken a good portion of energy and fresh air from the green lung and now are strengthened and liberated. In this way, they succeed in a clean performance, finding a successful path between intensive discussion and freely played music.
