LA Opera has announced the appointment of Venezuelan-Armenian conductor Domingo Hindoyan as its next Music Director. He will begin a five-year term starting July 1, 2026, following the two-decade tenure of James Conlon, who will step into the new role of Conductor Laureate.
Currently Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Hindoyan has led performances at many of the world’s premier opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Born in Caracas in 1980, Hindoyan began his musical journey at the age of five. He studied in his native country as well as at the Haute École de Musique de Genève, under the guidance of maestro Laurent Gay.
Hindoyan’s professional breakthrough came as the first assistant to the Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin from 2013 to 2016.
Hindoyan is married to the soprano Sonya Yoncheva. The couple have two children and resides in Switzerland.
