Von 1948 bis 1958 war der griechische Dirigent Dimitri Mitropoulos Musikdirektor des New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Auf diesem Album gibt es drei sehr unterschiedliche Werke.
Die Suite aus dem Ballett Roméo et Juliette ist ungemein farbig und detailreich, sehr atmosphärisch, dazu voller Kraft und Spannung oder auch nostalgisch gefühlvoll, was besonders gut in der wunderbar kantablen Balkonszene zum Ausdruck kommt.
Sehr lyrisch erklingt auch die Fantasie über ein Thema von Thomas Tallis von Ralph Vaughan Williams. Mitropoulos dirigiert das Stück in schnellen 12 Minuten und 46 Sekunden. Die Musik bleibt kantabel, klingt aber zugleich auch sehr intensiv und leidenschaftlich. Keine Trauermusik, sondern eine Liebeserklärung!
Mitropoulos dirigiert dann eine höchst eindringliche, oft drängende und intensive Verklärte Nacht. Andere Dirigenten haben das Werk mit langsamerem Tempo romantischer werden lassen, doch hier ist die Musik aufgewühlt und packend, mit einzigartiger Spannung und loderndem Feuer.
From 1948 to 1958, Dimitri Mitropoulos, a Greek conductor, was the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. This album features three very different works.
The suite from the ballet Romeo and Juliet is extremely colorful and rich in detail. It is very atmospheric, full of power and tension, and nostalgically soulful. This is particularly well expressed in the wonderfully cantabile Balcony Scene.
Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis also sounds lyrical. Mitropoulos conducts the piece in just 12 minutes and 46 seconds. The music remains cantabile but sounds intense and passionate at the same time. It’s not mourning music, but a declaration of love!
Mitropoulos then conducts a highly haunting, often urgent, and intense Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night). While other conductors have performed the piece more romantically at a slower tempo, here the music is agitated and gripping with unique tension and blazing fire.
