Bassoonist Judith Farmer, soloist, chamber musician, teacher, bassoonist in the LA Opera Orchestra (she was also principal bassoonist of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra for a long time) has put together a varied program that begins with the Bassoon Sonata by Johann Friedrich Fasch. It is a virtuoso as well as expressive sonata in the Galant style, heard in a lyrically expressive and technically flawless performance by Judith Farmer. Her beautiful, warm tone is immediately appealing.
This is followed by Duo, an amusing dialogue between flute and bassoon by Gernot Wolfgang.
Roger Boutry, longtime conductor of the Garde Républicaine, composed Interférences for bassoon and piano in 1972 for Maurice Allard. The rhapsodic piece gives the soloist an opportunity to play with as much virtuosity as cantabile.
Poulenc’s 1922 Sonata for Bassoon and Clarinet is typical Poulenc, with two alert, light-hearted movements and a tender romance. It is heard on this CD in an equally nuanced, colorful and rhetorical interpretation that once again showcases Judith Farmer’s exquisite bassoon playing.
