Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink has announced the end of his active career. He will give his last concert on 6 September in Lucerne, Switzerland, the 90-year-old told the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant on Wednesday.

Next Saturday Haitink will conduct for the last time in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, where he was chief conductor for 27 years.

Haitink conducted the world’s leading orchestras. After his departure from Amsterdam in 1988, he conducted the Royal Opera in London for 14 years. He was musical director of the Glyndebourne Opera Festival, chief conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.
