French composer Paul Méfano, a great figure of the contemporary repertoire, passed away on 15 September at the age of 83. Born in March 1937, in Basra, Iraq, Paul Méfano studied music in Paris with Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen. Later he went to Basle to take classes with Pierre Boulez, of whom he was an unconditional admirer. He created the ensemble 2e2m (Etudes Expressions des Modes Musicaux) in Champigny sur Marne in 1972 and toured the world with this ensemble.

His oeuvre comprises instrumental music, piano music, operas and electronic music.
