The Fryderyk Chopin Institute Warsaw announces the International Chopin Competition ‘The Real Chopin’, to be held at the Philharmonic Hall in Warsaw from 5 to 15 October 2023. In this competition, including finals with orchestra, candidates will have to play on period instruments which Frederic Chopin was playing himself when creating his works. They are including historical instruments from Chopin Institute Collections as well as new concert instruments built by world famous maker Paul McNulty.

The announcement says: « Performing Chopin’s music on Chopin’s time pianos is continuing tradition started by great Polish musician Wanda Landowska, who became world famous performing music of Baroque on instruments it was written for and who brought back to concert on harpsichord. Now, with more well restored romantic time pianos and new high quality copies of Chopin’s time instruments available, this traditions expands further. This enables to perform Chopin’s music with all beauty as it sounded when Chopin first played his works. »

The competition was first held in September 2018. This year’s edition is the second one.

The Jury will comprise Paolo Giacometti, Yves Henry, Tobias Koch, Václav Luks, Janusz Olejniczak, Olga Pashchenko, Ewa Pobłocka, Andreas Staier and Wojciech Świtała.
