Yikeshan Abudushalamu

The Chinese composer Yikeshan Abudushalamu is the winner of the first edition of the International Composition Competition Luciano Berio. The jury, chaired by Antonio Pappano and composed of Ivan Fedele (Italy), Unsuk Chin (South Korea), Tristan Murail (France) and Augusta Read Thomas (USA) awarded also two honorable mentions: one to the Korean composer Hankyeol Yoon and another to the Chinese composer Bo Li.

Yikeshan Abudushalamu (*1985) is a member of the Uyghur Turkic community in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in northwest China. He studied composition in Switzerland and in Shanghai. He receives a commission of €20,000 for the creation of a composition for orchestra which, thanks to the partnership with the Filarmonica alla Scala, the Orchestra del Teatro del Maggio Fiorentino, and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, will include six performances in 2021: three in Rome at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and three in the headquarters of the partner orchestras. In addition, the composition will be published by Universal Edition (EU).
