Nerone ist eine unvollendete Oper von Arrigo Boito, die das Leben des römischen Kaisers Nero in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Die Handlung zeigt die Spannung zwischen der traditionellen römischen Religion und dem aufkommenden Christentum, wobei der Große Brand Roms im Finale des vierten Aktes einen Höhepunkt darstellt. Boito verstarb, bevor er den vierten Akt vollenden und den geplanten fünften Akt, der den Wahnsinn Neros thematisieren sollte, beginnen konnte.
Arturo Toscanini ergriff die Initiative, um den vierten Akt vervollständigen zu lassen, ohne aber den Erfolg der Oper dauerhaft zu sichern.
Die musikalische Leitung dieser Produktion liegt in den Händen von Francesco Cilluffo, der die Musik wirkungsvoll werden lässt.
Der georgische Tenor Mikheil Sheshaberidze, singt einen kraftvoll und ind er Höhe sicheren Nerone. Franco Vassallo wird seinem Ruf als großer Verdi-Bariton gerecht und kann die Figur des Simon Mago bemerkenswert ausdrucksvoll singen.
In der Rolle des christlichen Anführers Fanuel überzeugt der Bariton Roberto Frontali mit ausdrucksvollem Gesang.
Die beiden Frauenfiguren, Asteria und Rubria, werden von der Sopranistin Valentina Boi und der deutsch-türkischen Mezzosopranistin Deniz Uzun durchwegs befriedigend gesungen.
Die anderen Rollen sind gut besetzt und sichern der Aufführung eine gute Qualität.
Nerone is an unfinished opera by Arrigo Boito focusing on the life of the Roman emperor Nero. The plot depicts the tension between traditional Roman religion and emerging Christianity. The Great Fire of Rome forms the climax of the fourth act finale. Boito died before completing the fourth act or beginning the planned fifth act, which was to focus on Nero’s madness.
Arturo Toscanini took the initiative to complete the fourth act, though this did not ensure the opera’s lasting success.
Francesco Cilluffo directs the music of this production, bringing it to life.
Georgian tenor Mikheil Sheshaberidze sings a powerful Nerone, hitting his high notes with confidence. Franco Vassallo lives up to his reputation as a great Verdi baritone, singing the role of Simon Mago with remarkable expressiveness.
Baritone Roberto Frontali convinces in the role of the Christian leader Fanuel with his expressive singing.
Soprano Valentina Boi and German-Turkish mezzo-soprano Deniz Uzun satisfactorily perform the two female characters, Asteria and Rubria.
The other roles are well cast, ensuring the performance’s high quality.
