Like other composers, Sergei Rachmaninov used the 24 keys for his 24 Préludes. Nevertheless, they were more than technical pieces, since they were mostly intended as encores and accordingly designed for effect. This is precisely what made them suspect to many people. The French pianist Fanny Azzuro, however, searches for other values… and finds them. She does not look for opulence or superficial drama and certainly not for the pathetic of the music, but for clarity, colors and the sublime beauty of the music. Thus she succeeds in differentiating the individual pieces beautifully and giving each its own character; she renders the soulfulness of the music without bombast and sentimentalism.
The only thing I don’t like so much about this production is the sound. The Yamaha grand certainly sounds nice and clear, but the sound recording is a touch too reverberant and when the music gets strong, the sound seems a bit blurry.
