Vom schwedischen Komponisten Hans Eklund (1927-1999) gibt es dreizehn Symphonien. Allesamt sind sie tonal und mit Ausnahme der Vierten tragen sie  italienische Titel. Drei Werke hat Hermann Bäumer für diese cpo-Produktion ausgewählt.

Die raue, zerklüftete Dritte Symphonie ist inspiriert von der Landschaft und der Volksmusik der schwedischen Ostsee-Insel Gotland, während sich die Fünfte, Quadri, mit Kriegsthemen auseinandersetzt. Die drei Sätze gehen von Gemälden aus, der erste von Richard Berghs ‘Das Mädchen und der Tod’, der zweite von Bengt Nordquists ‘Kriegstanz’ und der letzte von Gunnar Jonssons ‘Die Zerstörung’.  Die Musik klingt aufgewühlt und dramatisch.

Die 1995 entstandene 11. Symphonie heißt zwar Sinfonia piccola, doch sie ist länger als die beiden anderen dieser CD. Das Werk ist eine Hommage an Eklunds Lehrer Lars-Erik Larsson. Die beiden ersten Sätze sind wie das für den Komponisten typisch zu sein scheint, kraftvoll und dramatisch. Die Elfte endet zwar mit einem Adagio, aber auch dieses ist düster und effektvoll.

Herrmann Bäumer und das Orchester aus Norrköping bedienen die drei robusten Symphonien mit einem passend intensiven und ausdrucksstarken Spiel.

There are thirteen symphonies by the Swedish composer Hans Eklund (1927-1999). All of them are tonal and, with the exception of the Fourth, they have Italian titles. Hermann Bäumer has selected three works for this cpo production.
The rough, jagged Third Symphony is inspired by the landscape and folk music of the Swedish Baltic island of Gotland, while the Fifth, Quadri, deals with war themes. The three movements are based on paintings, the first on Richard Bergh’s ‘The Maiden and Death’, the second on Bengt Nordquist’s ‘War Dance’ and the last on Gunnar Jonsson’s ‘The Destruction’. The music sounds agitated and dramatic.
The 11th Symphony, written in 1995, is called Sinfonia piccola, but it is longer than the other two on this CD. The work is a tribute to Eklund’s teacher Lars-Erik Larsson. The first two movements are, as it seems typical for the composer, powerful and dramatic. The Eleventh ends with an Adagio, but this too is dark and effective.
Herrmann Bäumer and the orchestra from Norrköping serve the three robust symphonies with a suitably intense and expressive playing.
