Accentus releases a Zurich Opera production of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra. Andreas Homoki has moved the opera to the 1920s, with such a sharpening of the characters and the intrigues in the gray interior of a palace that the whole opera becomes a chamber play.
Christian Gerhaher makes his role debut as Doge and convinces with a profound, very sensitive interpretation that masterfully expresses the conflictual in the character. From a purely vocal point of view, he sings the role very lyrically, rather soft, rich in shadings and brightly toned, thus producing a good contrast to the rather dark orchestral sound. The design is as intelligent as it is poignant.
The role of Fiesco is sung by Christof Fischesser with black, clear bass, in a performance that is very human and believable.
Jennifer Rowley impresses as Amelia Grimaldi on a vocally remarkable level. In terms of character, her voice is a bit too big for the role for my taste.
Otar Jorjikia sings a powerful and unforced sounding Adorno. The conspirator Paolo Albiani is sung by Nicholas Brownlee. His voice is not particularly nuanced and sometimes a bit harsh.
On the podium of the Philharmonia Zurich, Fabio Luisi provides a darkly glowing Verdi orchestra.
