Die 1980 geborene britische Komponistin Anna Clyne hat mit Within Her Arms ein ganz hervorragendes, stimmungsvolles und bewegendes Stück geschrieben. Es ist ein musikalisches Gedenken an ihre kurz zuvor verstorbenen Mutter, gezeichnet von Liebe, aber auch von Schmerz. Einem aufmerksamen Zuhörer wird es unmöglich sein, von dieser spanungsvollen, kommunikativen Musik nicht ergriffen zu werden.
Abstractions ist eine Suite aus fünf Sätzen, die von zeitgenössischen Kunstwerken aus dem Baltimore Museum of Art und der Privatsammlung von Rheda Becker und Robert Meyerhoff inspiriert ist.
Marble Moon wurde von Sara VanDerBeeks Serie digitaler, chromogener Farbdrucke aus dem Jahr 2015 inspiriert, in der die Künstlerin ein neu fotografiertes Bild einer totalen Sonnenfinsternis aus ihrer Kindheit einem aktuellen Foto des Lichteinfalls auf die Marmorarchitektur des Viertels Mount Vernon in Baltimore gegenüberstellt. Clyne schrieb dazu eine spannende Musik, die an Naturbeschreibungen von Richard Strauss erinnert.
Auguries ist von einer zwölfteiligen Farbradierung von Julie Mehretu inspiriert, « die an Vogelschwärme im Zufallsflug erinnert. » Dazu passt ein flirrendes, ‘fliegendes’ Streichergewebe mit Verzerrungen und Akzenten anderer Instrumentengruppen. Seascape ist inspiriert von Fotos des Japaners Hiroshi Sugimoto. Für dieses impressionistische und stimmungsvolle Stück könnte Debussy Pate gestanden haben.
Lithografien von Ellsworth Kelly inspirierten River, und nach dem ruhigen kontemplativen Seebild ist River ein dramatisches Stück, das hier die schiere Kraft, dort die Reinheit und Schönheit des Wassers wiedergibt.
Das Gemälde 3 des Künstlers Brice Marden steht am Ursprung von Three. Das Stück startet ruhig in einem moderaten Rhythmus und gewinnt gegen Schluss an Klangfülle, um mit einem effektvollen Schluss zu enden.
Restless Oceans wurde 2019 beim World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos uraufgeführt. Die Musiker müssen darin nicht nur spielen, sondern auch Vokalisen singen. Die Musik ist manchmal scharf rhythmisch, manchmal melodisch lyrisch, und das Stück ist entsprechend effektvoll.
Bei der Komposition von Color Field ließ sich Clyne von Mark Rothkos Serie von Farbfeldgemälden inspirieren, insbesondere von seinem 1961 entstandenen Werk Orange, Red, Yellow. Die Musik beginnt mit ruhigem Gelb, wechselt dann zu einem rhythmisch erregten Rot. Das Finale, Orange, beginnt wiederum ruhig und gewinnt an Energie und Rhythmik die die Musik zum Klimax treiben. Nach dem eine ruhige, schöne Melodie das Werk ruhig und kontemplativ beendet.
Mithin ist dies ein wirklich tolles Porträt der Komponistin Anna Clyne, deren anregende Kompositionen ein breites Publikum begeistern dürften, ohne dass die Musik irgendwo auch nur entfernt anbiedernd sein oder Showcharakter haben würde. I love it!
British composer Anna Clyne, born in 1980, has written an outstanding, atmospheric, and moving piece titled Within Her Arms. A musical tribute to her recently deceased mother, it is marked by love and pain. Attentive listeners will find it impossible not to be moved by this intense, expressive music.
‘Abstractions’ is a suite of five movements inspired by contemporary artworks from the Baltimore Museum of Art and the private collection of Rheda Becker and Robert Meyerhoff.
‘Marble Moon’ was inspired by Sara VanDerBeek’s 2015 series of digital chromogenic color prints. In this series, the artist juxtaposes a newly photographed image of a total solar eclipse from her childhood with a current photo of light falling on the marble architecture of Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood. Clyne composed exciting music for this piece that is reminiscent of Richard Strauss’s nature-inspired works.
Auguries is inspired by Julie Mehretu’s twelve-part color etching, « reminiscent of flocks of birds in random flight. » It is accompanied by a shimmering, ‘flying’ string texture with distortions and accents from other instrumental groups. Seascape is inspired by photographs by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. This impressionistic and atmospheric piece could have been inspired by Debussy.
Ellsworth Kelly’s lithographs inspired River. Following the calm, contemplative image of the lake, River is a dramatic piece that reflects the power, purity, and beauty of water.
Painting 3 by Brice Marden inspired Three. The piece begins quietly, building in sonority towards the end and culminating in a dramatic finale.
Restless Oceans premiered at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos in 2019. The musicians must not only play but also sing vocalizations. The music is sometimes sharply rhythmic and sometimes melodically lyrical, making the piece correspondingly effective.
Clyne was inspired by Mark Rothko’s series of color field paintings when composing Color Field, particularly his 1961 work Orange, Red, Yellow. The piece begins with a calm yellow section and then shifts to a rhythmically agitated red section. The finale, Orange, begins calmly and gradually builds in energy and rhythm, driving the music to a climax. A calm, beautiful melody then brings the piece to a tranquil and contemplative close.
This piece is a wonderful portrait of composer Anna Clyne, whose inspiring compositions are sure to delight a wide audience without ever being ingratiating or showy. I love it!
