Japanese cellists Haruma Sato and Michiaki Ueno won First and Second Prize in the Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition, which ended yesterday in Warsaw.

Yibai Chen of China received Third Prize and Oliver Herbert of the United States came fourth. Oliver Herbert won the prize for the best performance of Lutoslawski’s Sacher Variations and Haruma Sato for his interpretation of the composer’s Grave. The Lutoslawski Competition, which was launched in 1997, three years after the composer’s death, aims to promote the prominent composer’s work. The next Lutoslawski Cello Competition is scheduled for 2021.
