Daniele Gatti

The Milanese conductor Daniele Gatti canceled all of his engagements at La Scala for the coming season starting with Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande after the Korean Myung-Whun Chung was named Music Director at Milan’s opera house.

The 63-year-old Gatti was considered the favorite to become the new Music Director of La Scala, however, in April, Teatro alla Scala announced that Myung-Whun Chung would be the company’s next Music Director.

Gatti had been engaged for Pelléas et Mélisande, and the new artistic director Fortunato Ortombina said that his hand remained outstretched: « I called Gatti, but couldn’t reach him and will call him back. I have written him a message. An outstretched hand from my side, » said the new artistic director, but Gatti did not take it.

Gatti is currently the new Chief Conductor of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Chief Conductor of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and Artistic Advisor of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
