In seinem neuen Werk ließ sich der dänisch-spanische Komponist, Saxophonist und Organist Peter Navarro-Alonso (*1973) vom schillernden und zugleich mörderischen Leben des Renaissance-Komponisten Gesualdo inspirieren. Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa (ca. 1561-1613) war sowohl für seine innovative Musik als auch für den Mord an seiner Frau und ihrem Liebhaber bekannt. Gesualdos Madrigale und geistliche Werke zeichnen sich durch eine für seine Zeit neuartige Chromatik und kühne Harmonien aus. Sie sprengten gewissermaßen die Grenzen der Renaissance-Musik.
Peter Navarro-Alonso, schon lange von Gesualdo fasziniert, schuf mit In flagranti delicto ein einstündiges Stück in Zusammenarbeit mit der Geigerin Christina Åstrand und dem Dirigenten Paul Hillier. Die Komposition, so heißt es, « erforscht die Dunkelheit von Gesualdos Psyche durch musikalische Zitate » und wurde mit dem dänischen Instrumentalensemble Stralo und dem Theatre of Voices aufgenommen.
Die beunruhigenden emotionalen Achterbahnfahrten der neuen Komposition erfahren eine Darbietung, die in jeder Hinsicht den Forderungen der Kunst gerecht wird. Mit einem ausgewogenen Klangbild und einer transparenten Ensemblekultur bleibt immer der Durchblick auf das kompositorische Kalkül erhalten. Auch Ausdruck und Dynamik lassen keinerlei Wünsche offen.
In his new work, the Danish-Spanish composer, saxophonist and organist Peter Navarro-Alonso (*1973) was inspired by the dazzling and at the same time murderous life of the Renaissance composer Gesualdo. Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa (ca. 1561-1613) was known both for his innovative music as well as for the murder of his wife and her lover. Gesualdo’s madrigals and sacred works are characterized by chromaticism and bold harmonies that were new for his time. In a way, they broke the boundaries of Renaissance music.
Peter Navarro-Alonso, who had long been fascinated by Gesualdo, created with In flagranti delicto a one-hour piece in collaboration with violinist Christina Åstrand and conductor Paul Hillier. The composition, it is said, « explores the darkness of Gesualdo’s psyche through musical quotations » and was recorded with the Danish instrumental ensemble Stralo and the Theatre of Voices.
The new composition’s unsettling emotional rollercoaster rides are performed in a way that meets the artistic demands in every respect. With a balanced sound and transparent ensemble, the compositional structure remains clear at all times. The expression and dynamics are also excellent.
