The Mayor General of Bucharest, Stelian Bujduveanu, has awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Bucharest to Maestro Cristian Macelaru, internationally renowned conductor and Artistic Director of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition.
Bucharest, the capital of Romania thus honors excellence and recognizes the contribution of an artist who has taken the name of his country to the most important stages of the world.
The official ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, in the foyer of the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest.
Macelaru simultaneously holds top artistic positions: artistic director of the George Enescu International Festival and Competition, music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Orchestre National de France, principal conductor and artistic director of the World Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Interlochen Arts Center, artistic partner of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, and is responsible for the music direction of the Cabrillo Contemporary Music Festival in Santa Cruz, California.
