The Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra in Bangkok has announced American conductor Carl St. Clair, 73, as Music Director. St. Clair will also collaborate with the College of Music, Mahidol University, where he will mentor young musicians through masterclasses, workshops, and educational initiatives.
St.Clair recently concluded a 35-year tenure as Music Director of the Pacific Symphony where he became the longest-serving American-born conductor of a major U.S. orchestra. He also holds the title of Conductor Emeritus with the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, having served as its Music Director from 2013 to 2023.
From 1998 to 2004, St. Clair was permanent guest conductor of the SWR Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart. In Weimar, St. Clair was General Music Director at the German National Theater and the Staatskapelle Weimar from 2005 to 2008, before moving to the Komische Oper in Berlin in 2008. In January 2024, the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra appointed Carl St. Clair as its Honorary Guest Conductor in recognition of his commitment and over 25 years of musical friendship.
