Mit dem ruhigen, von elegisch bis pastoral reichenden Stück Rolling Fields beginnt dieses Album, als käme die Musik aus einer anderen Zeit, lyrisch und etwas italienisch im Charakter.
Running With Horses handelt nicht von einem Pferdrennen, es ist eine Rhapsodie « an einen flüsternden, geliebten Geist, der von uns gegangen ist und nun frei ist », sagt die Komponistin. Anfangs elegisch wird die Musik zunehmend freudiger, dann wieder ruhiger, erneut vitaler und endet schließlich ruhig-pastoral.
Die den Wald porträtierende Sylvan Suite besteht aus drei Sätzen, während die Meadow Suite vier tänzerische Sätze hat, Gigue I, Sarabande (ein Tanz der Liebenden), Gigue II und Finale.
Wedding Suite wurde komponiert, um den Wunsch einer Braut nach einer neuen Hochzeitsmusik zu erfüllen. Die Suite ist teils feierlich, teils zart und liebevoll.
Wer von Winds Blowing ein stürmisches Stück erwartet hat, irrte sich. Es zeigt, so die Komponistin « die Bilder eines Schoners in voller Fahrt in der Nacht, in völliger Harmonie mit Wind und Wasser. »
Unter dem Strich bleibt die Feststellung, dass wir es hier mit einem vom London Symphony fein gespielten, durchwegs ruhigen Programm mit viel schöner, romantisch getränkter Musik zu tun haben. Nichts Weltbewegendes, aber angenehm und insgesamt beruhigend!
The album begins with the tranquil piece « Rolling Fields, » which ranges from elegiac to pastoral. The music seems to come from another time – lyrical and somewhat Italian in character.
« Running with Horses » is not about a horse race. According to the composer, it is a rhapsody « to a whispering, beloved spirit who has left us and is now free. » Initially elegiac, the music becomes increasingly joyful and then calms down again. It becomes more vital and finally ends quietly and pastorally.
The Sylvan Suite, which portrays the forest, consists of three movements. The Meadow Suite has four dance-like movements: Gigue I, Sarabande (a dance of lovers), Gigue II, and Finale.
The Wedding Suite was composed to fulfill a bride’s wish for new wedding music. The suite is partly solemn and partly tender.
Anyone expecting Winds Blowing to be a stormy piece would be mistaken. According to the composer, it depicts « images of a schooner sailing at full speed at night in complete harmony with the wind and water. »
In short, this is a finely played, thoroughly calm program by the London Symphony with lots of beautiful, romantically imbued music. It’s nothing earth-shattering, but pleasant and soothing overall!
