Bei einem Besuch in Seoul hat der Minister für Kultur der Region Novosibirsk, Vasily Kuzin, erklärt, Novosibirsk sei bereit, den Internationalen Tchaikovsky-Jugendwettbewerb auszurichten. Dieser Vorschlag werde vom Gouverneur der Region unterstützt. Das Problem ist nur, Russland hat den Wettbewerb gerade dieses Jahr organisiert, und es ist Tradition, dass er jedes Mal in einem anderen Land stattfindet. Der Wettbewerb richtet sich an junge Musiker unter 17 in den Kategorien Violine, Cello und Klavier.

Um seine Finanzen zu sanieren, entlässt das Opernhaus des ‘Maggio Musicale’ in Florenz 53 Mitarbeiter aus den Bereichen Technik und Verwaltung. Sie sollen alle von der Gesellschaft Ales, einem Unternehmen des ‘Ministero dei Beni culturali’ übernommen werden und dort andere Aufgaben erhalten.

Im Kanton Basel-Stadt hatte ein Beamter entgegen anderslautenden Bestimmungen Aufenthalts- und Arbeitsbewilligungen für Musiker aus Drittstaaten erteilt (Pizzicato berichtete). Bayreuth, Festspielhaus

Die Bayreuther Festspiele trennen sich von dem skandalträchtigen Künstler Jonathan Meese. Er war angefragt worden, 2016 den ‘Parsifal’ auszustatten. Sein Konzept sei nicht finanzierbar, teilten die Festspiele am heutigen Freitag mit. Die bühnenbildnerische und kostümliche Gesamtausstattung hätte eine erhebliche Überschreitung des zur Verfügung stehenden Budgets zur Folge gehabt. Meese wurde entlassen.

The Lincoln Center in New York plans to rename its Avery Fisher Hall. The management asked the Fisher family to agree to the name change and sweetened the proposal made to the descendants of the well known benefactor by paying the family $15 million for permission to drop the name. The reason is that Lincoln Center looks for a major sponsor to cover a planned $500 million renovation with the promise of giving the building the name of that person or institution. Read More →

Metropolitan Opera New York

The Metropolitan Opera in New York has asked its soloists to cut their fees by up to 7 percent to match the reductions that the Met’s chorus and orchestra agreed to – or to make a tax-deductible contribution to the company of an equivalent amount. Some of the Met’s most popular singers have apparently already agreed to accept the cuts, including Anna Netrebko, Joyce DiDonato, Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming. If the top fees at the Met have been $17,000 a performance; the 7 percent reduction would diminish them to $15,810.

Count Jean-Pierre de Launoit, president of the International Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels passed away on November 12, aged 79. He was one great figure of the Belgian cultural life. He was President of the Executive Committee of the Queen Elisabeth Competition from 1972 and president of the Board since 1987.

While the Danish Radio has decided to close its chamber Orchestra, the Parliament in Copenhagen has now formally asked the Danish Minister of Culture to take all possible measures to save this orchestra. Marianne Jelved can hardly refuse this, however she will probably ask to get the money to do so…

Bramwell Tovey

Bramwell Tovey, music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and former chief conductor of the Luxembourg Philharmonic suffered the loss of two scores, his baton case and some other personal items from his vehicle’s trunk in downtown Vancouver on Saturday night. A report by CBC says there was one score with Tovey’s notes from over 30 years and one own composition, a string quartet manuscript that was almost completed and set to premiere this Friday, Nov.14. Tovey is offering a reward to anyone who finds his music.
