The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Contemporary Music category goes in this eighth edition to Greek composer Georges Aperghis (*1945) « for his reinvention of music theatre using sounds, gestures, space and technology, and involving performers in the compositional process ». Aperghis, who lives in France, creates, directs and composes stage works that dissolve the boundaries between theatre and music, with actors and instrumentalists playing interchangeable roles. Aperghis, in the jury’s view, has successfully reached out to new audiences, while making contemporary music part and parcel of the theatrical experience.
