Der Tscheche Josef Bohuslav Foerster lässt seine 2. Symphonie von 1893 mit einem teils beschaulichen, teils schwermütigen, gegen Schluss aber immer leidenschaftlicheren Satz beginnen, dessen Farbenvielfalt für sich einnimmt.

Recht düster klingt auch das Andante sostenuto, während das Scherzo lebhaft und frohgemut, teils auch etwas pathetisch-feierlich daher kommt. Ein heldisches Finale beschließt die Symphonie, die angenehm zu hören ist, aber keine bleibenden Eindrücke hinterlässt.

Rostands romantisch-heroisches, tragisch endendes Theaterstück Cyrano de Bergerac musste Foerster interessieren. Und es gelang ihm damit tatsächlich sein erfolgreichstes Orchesterwerk mit farbig-evokativen Szenenbildern, die sogar recht französisch klingen.

Gute Interpretationen und eine gute Tonaufnahmen runden die weitgehend positiven Eindrücke zu diesem Album ab.

The Czech composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster begins his Second Symphony from 1893 with a movement that is partly contemplative, partly melancholic, but increasingly passionate towards the end, captivating the listener with its rich variety of colors.

The Andante sostenuto also sounds rather gloomy, while the Scherzo is lively and cheerful, at times even somewhat solemn and ceremonial. A heroic finale concludes the symphony, which is pleasant to listen to but leaves no lasting impression.

Rostand’s romantic-heroic play Cyrano de Bergerac, with its tragic ending, must have interested Foerster. And he actually succeeded in creating his most successful orchestral work with colorful, evocative scenes that even sound quite French.

Good interpretations and good sound recordings round off the largely positive impressions of this album.
