In 2026, Suntory Hall in Tokyo will mark its 40th anniversary. Opened on October 12, 1986, Suntory Hall was the first dedicated concert hall in Tokyo, based on the concept: “in pursuit of the world’s most beautiful sound” and also the first in Japan to be built adopting the vineyard style.
The hall has presented original and high-quality programs of concerts, educational projects with the view of developing and passing on our musical culture to the next generation, and has implemented various initiatives to engage the public. Since its opening, it has held over 21,000 concerts and has been visited by 23.04 million people (as of the end of October, 2025).
Suntory Hall is now ready to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a wide range of activities over 11 months from April 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027.
During its 40th season, Suntory Hall will present a variety of commemoratives concerts such as the chamber music festival “Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden” which marks its 15th anniversary, a revival of the highly-regarded original Hall Opera® production of Tan Dun’s TEA: A Mirror of Soul, the annual « Suntory Hall Summer Festival » of contemporary music which has taken place since 1987, the “40th Anniversary Gala Concert” – the central event of the anniversary season, and Wiener Philharmoniker Week in Japan 2026 led by Maestro Riccardo Muti who celebrates his 85th birthday in 2026. Additionally, the “Tokyo Symphony Orchestra & Suntory Hall Subscription Concert for Children” series, the first of its kind in Japan, marks its landmark 100th concert in December 2026.
