Der Kanadier Timothy Corlis (geb. 1972) ist ein erfolgreicher Komponist von Chorwerken. Missa Pax repräsentiert zwei Aspekte aus der Vergangenheit des Komponisten: « Zum einen meine frühen Jahre, in denen ich als anglikanischer Chorknabe die Hochmesse sang, und zum anderen meine Zeit als junger Erwachsener, in der ich mich als Aktivist engagierte.
Diese beiden frühen Lebensabschnitte haben mich tief geprägt: Meine prägenden Jahre in der Kirche hallen noch immer nach und dienen oft als Ausgangspunkt für meinen musikalischen Ausdruck; meine Jahre als Aktivist, in denen ich regelmäßig an Protesten teilnahm und mich radikal für soziale Gerechtigkeit engagierte, haben meine Weltanschauung geprägt und mich dazu gebracht, meine Kindheitserfahrungen aus einer anderen Perspektive zu betrachten. Die Friedensmesse ist ein Versuch, zu meinen kirchlichen Wurzeln zurückzukehren und Musik als Mittel zu nutzen, um die liturgische Tradition neu zu interpretieren, diese sehr unterschiedlichen Welten miteinander zu versöhnen und den alten Gewohnheiten neuen Ausdruck und neue Lebendigkeit zu verleihen. »
In Loveliest of trees erinnert Corlis an die die Schönheit und Fülle der Natur. Die Rolle des göttlichen Weiblichen bei der Geburt Christi wird in O magnum mysterium reflektiert. Die Dynamik von New York City ist die Inspiration hinter Immortality, und In paradisum erinnert Corlis daran, dass das Paradies oft etwas ist, « das wir hier auf der Erde erleben, ein Ort, der vom Himmel aus betrachtet eine einsame und zerbrechliche Oase ist, voller Kreativität und Leben, inmitten der Weite des kalten Weltraums. »

Canadian Timothy Corlis (born 1972) is a successful composer of choral works. Missa Pax represents two aspects of the composer’s past: « … one part beginning with my early years growing up singing the High Mass as an Anglican boy chorister and later as a young adult engaged as an activist. These two early stages left a profound impression on me: my formative years in the church still resonate deeply and often serve as a starting-point for musical expression; my years as an activist, regularly attending protests and radically engaging with concerns of social justice, shaped my philosophy and caused me to see my childhood experiences with a different perspective. The Peace Mass is an attempt to come back to my church roots and to use music as a way to reinterpret the liturgical tradition, to reconcile these very disparate worlds, to give the old habits new expression and new vitality. »
In ‘Loveliest of trees,’ Corlis recalls the beauty and abundance of nature. The role of the divine feminine in the birth of Christ is reflected in O magnum mysterium. The dynamism of New York City is the inspiration behind Immortality, and in In paradisum, Corlis reminds us that paradise is often something « we experience here on Earth, a place that, when viewed from heaven, is a lonely and fragile oasis, full of creativity and life, amid the vastness of cold space. »
Corlis’ immediately accessible, melodically expressive, and atmospheric music is rendered to great effect by the Edison Singers.
