Der Pianist und Komponist Anton Urspruch (1850-1907) gehört zu jenen Musikern, die zu Lebzeiten berühmt und anerkannt waren, und dann in Vergessenheit gerieten. Der Liszt-Schüler, in dessen Musik der Einfluss des großen Meisters zu vernehmen ist. Das gilt auch für das Programm dieses Albums.
Die Variationen, op. 10, umfassen 24 atmosphärisch sehr unterschiedliche Variationen über ein wunderschönes melodisches Thema.
Cinq Morceaux, op. 19 umfasst fünf brillante und wunderschöne Stücke.
Wenn Unspruchs Konzerte von Männern aufgenommen wurden, so scheinen die Solowerke vor allem Pianistinnen anzusprechen, obschon seine Musik nichts Weibliches hat, sondern eher Ausdruck einer männlich formulierten Romantik ist.
Die junge spanische Pianistin Maria Linares bleibt diesem Charakter nichts schuldig. Sie betont den romantischen Charakter, die Leidenschaftlichkeit und die Virtuosität ebenso gut wie sie die poetischen Stücke in verinnerlichten Interpretation zu Gehör bringen kann. Ihr Klavierklang ist schön rund und warm.

A student of Liszt, the influence of the great master can be heard in his music. This also applies to the program of this album.
The Variations, Op. 10, comprise 24 variations, each with a very different atmosphere, on a beautiful melodic theme.

While Unspruch’s concertos were recorded by men, his solo works seem to appeal primarily to female pianists, even though his music has nothing feminine about it, but is rather an expression of a masculine romanticism.
The young Spanish pianist Maria Linares does full justice to this character. She emphasizes the romantic character, passion, and virtuosity just as well as she is able to bring the poetic pieces to life in her internalized interpretation. Her piano sound is beautifully round and warm.
