American Pianist Jonathan Biss (*1980) and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia propose a free online course on Beethoven’s 32 piano sonatas. It is due to begin on September 3 and will last for five week. According to the presentation of the course which will have regular deadlines, an estimated workload of 1-2 hours per week will be necessary to follow the lessons and interactive exercises.

Each lecture will explore a different facet of the music; all will attempt to locate the source of the tremendous psychological power of Beethoven’s music. Jonathan Biss also will indicate recommended reading and listening. It is not necessary to have studied an instrument to take this course, or to have any knowledge of music theory. While these may enhance the experience of the course, it is designed for students of all backgrounds with a desire to learn more about Beethoven and his world.
