The Pau Casals Foundation will lend Pablo Casals’ legendary Goffriller Cello to the First Laureate of the 2026 Queen Elisabeth Competition.
Pablo Casals acquired this instrument, made in 1733 by the Venetian luthier Matteo Goffriller, in 1908. He played it for more than sixty years, using it in all his recordings. He considered this cello to be “his dearest friend” and consistently preferred its strong personality and distinctive sound, so close to the human voice, to the Stradivarius that were offered to him.
Upon his death, Pablo Casals bequeathed the cello to the Pau Casals Foundation. Its usufruct was held by his widow, Marta Casals, who cared for the instrument until recent years.
Committed to preserving the living legacy of the instrument and continuing Casals’ lifelong dedication to young musicians – while also honoring his deep and lasting friendship with Queen Elisabeth – the Pau Casals Foundation has decided to entrust the cello to the First Laureate of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition.
The loan of the cello, now known as the “Casals Goffriller,” forms part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Pablo Casals’ birth, which coincides with that of Queen Elisabeth. This milestone will be marked by an extensive international program of events and activities throughout 2026 and 2027.
