French pianist Laurence Oldak was a finalist in the Busoni International Competition in 1993 and 1995. Then she privileged temporarily her mother duties. In 2009 she founded the Mel Bonis Quartet with Joëlle Cousin, Florian Wallez and Florent Audibert and has since also played chamber music in other formations. Her second solo CD is dedicated to Bach and Chopin, an unusual combination.
More important, however, are the interpretations. Laurence Oldak plays a very sensitive, very cantabile and colorful Bach, light and airy. The sensitive naturalness of her playing, without pathos or heaviness, is based on an alert and inspired mind that does not allow for any excesses.
The Chopin Sonata is played with the greatest clarity, also cantabile and with beautiful, iridescent colors.
The music on this CD undoubtedly has character, it is clearly feminine and charming. This is what distinguishes the Klarthe release and makes it interesting.
