The composer and bandoneon player Omar Massa is often regarded as the successor of Astor Piazzolla for both areas. The combination of his own works with those of Piazzolla is therefore more than logical, especially since he can thus contribute in both capacities.
Piazzolla’s Concerto for bandoneon Aconcagua, in which strings and percussion accompany the solo instrument, as well as the orchestral work Tangazo with variations on Buenos Aires are two of Piazzolla’s major works. Omar Massa also contributes a solo concerto for his instrument, entitled Buenos Aires-Berlin, which ties in with the city partnership. In addition, shorter works for the instrumentation can be heard. Buenos Aires Resonances is a premiere recording.
The style of the Nuevo Tango, to which these works belong, is as distinct as it is popular. Omar Massa, who comes from the center of this music, namely from the Argentine capital, is very familiar with the tone of this music. He has been living in Berlin for two years and can therefore, on the other hand, also relate to the German capital. His compositions, like those of Piazzolla, live from the ever-present melancholy, which nevertheless always conveys courage. He is also a master of his bandoneon, so that he can breathe into the solos and elicit the breath that this music needs in order to unfold its charm.
The Berlin Symphony Orchestra gives this music the character to immediately feel transported to La Boca, the birthplace of Nuevo Tango in Buenos Aires.
