Mstislav Rostropovich

After Dextra Musica, the musical instrument collection of Sparebank’s cultural foundation in Norway bought Mstislav Rostropovich’s Guadagnini cello for nearly €2,3 million from an auction, the instrument is now on loan to Swedish cellist Torleif Thedéen. Thedéen’s first performance with the cello will be at the Konserthuset Stockholm on 28 February.

British violinist Tasmin Little, 53, has announced her intention to retire from performing in 2020. « After more than 30 years on the concert platform giving something approaching 2000 performances, I have, after a great deal of thought, decided to hang up my concert gowns in the summer of 2020, » she wrote in a statement distributed by her management. Little says she wants to focus more on education and on non-performing projects.

After 22 concert seasons with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Chinese-American conductor Lan Shui, 61, ended his tenure as Music Director with two farewell concerts on 25 and 26 January. In recognition of his contributions, the SSO has conferred him the honorary title of Conductor Laureate. Shui is giving up his post to spend more time in Denmark with his wife and two sons, aged 13 and three.

Radio France has reduced its funding for the festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier by 50%, bringing it from €300.000 to €150.000, with another reduction in 2020. Meanwhile the Région Occitanie is stepping in with more funding to ensure the festival’s survival. The decision of the broadcaster comes after its own public funding is reduced by €4 million in 2019.

Born in Angers in 1930 he became organist at the church St. Serge in his home town at the age of 12.
